Crash Fixes

How to Clear Cache and Preferences in Football Manager [FM]

Clearing the cache is a necessary step whenever a new patch or data update is released to ensure that your game loads fresh files in case any existing ones have been modified. It effectively resets the game to its default settings. When official Football Manager updates like 20.2 or 20.3 transfer and data updates are released, it's recommended that everyone clears the Football Manager caches before continuing their saved game or starting a new one to ensure smooth gameplay.

Clearing the Football Manager caches should be the first action taken when encountering issues like:

Game won't launch or crashes at the start.

Problems with importing tactics, skins, or other graphics.

Football Manager displays a blank screen, such as not being able to see player profiles.

Slow loading times, especially in long-term saves.

Delete the Caches Folder

Before following these steps, ensure that Football Manager is closed and "Show hidden files and folders" is enabled.

For Windows 7:

Click 'Start.'

Select 'Computer.'

In the header, select the 'Organize' dropdown.

Choose 'Folder and Search Options.'

Within the 'View' tab, make sure 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' is selected.

For Windows 8.1 and Windows 10:

Click 'File Explorer' in the taskbar or type 'File Explorer' in the 'Desktop/Start.'

In the header, click 'View' and ensure 'Hidden Items' is ticked.

Next, navigate to the following path:

C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 202X

Delete the Preferences and/or Cache folder.

Upon deleting these folders, they will be regenerated when you launch the game. Remember to reconfigure any preferences, such as auto saves, sound levels, or game display mode, as they will be reset to default.

How to Delete the Football Manager Preferences Folder

In some cases, problems loading Football Manager are caused by incorrect settings in preferences, such as malfunctioning skins or other graphic rendering issues. You might want to reset your preferences to default to resolve these issues.

To delete the Football Manager preferences, follow the same approach as clearing the cache, but this time delete the preferences folder instead.

The full path is:

C: > Users > “Your Username” \AppData\Local\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 202X\Preferences

Alternatively, you can use the following method:

Click 'Start.'

Search for "Programs and Files."

Paste "%localappdata%/sports interactive/football manager 202X" into the box and press Enter.

Delete the Preferences folder.

C. Deleting the Editor Cache

If you encounter problems with saving or loading any version of the official Football Manager editor, you can also clear the editor cache by following the same procedures as described above. Select "Editor 202X" within the Sports Interactive folder and delete the caches folder within it.

Step 2 – Verify Gaming Cache [Steam]

Verifying the game cache is the crucial first step to reinstall complete, fresh files of the latest Football Manager version. Reinstalling fresh files won't break your save, making it fully playable after verification. Any deleted files will be restored, ensuring the game remains functional.

To verify game files for Football Manager:

Open Steam.

Go to your Gaming Library.

Right-click on Football Manager 20XX and select "Properties."

Click on "Local Files" and then "Verify Integrity of Game Cache."

Steam will verify the game's files, which may take several minutes. It will download any missing files, even if you've just verified. Once the process is completed, close the window and launch the game.
